Intuitive has 10 years experience of developing automation User Requirements Specifications (URS). We believe the URS is a crucial element in achieving project success. Balancing the content is critical - too little and there is a risk that the system vendor fails to satisfy your expectations; too much and you run the risk of imposing unnecessary design constraints and taking far too long to produce the document.
Our experience has allowed us to develop two template documents that between them ensure each unique requirement is unambiguously defined to provide full requirements traceability. Significantly, these well-developed templates save valuable time and money during the requirements gathering phase and ensure that every applicable requirement is captured.
The first document captures the system requirements of the Process Control System. This document is typically produced early in the requirements gathering phase and very quickly fixed. It defines requirements such as the system overview, number of HMI's and their location, basic control philosophy, data historian capabilities etc. We would include many basic requirements for a control system which we are able to specify based on our experience.
The second document is, however, more application-specific and is used to capture the process functional requirements, such as continuous control logic; for batch processes, this would include the batch sequence logic and the document would be structured to maximise the benefits of the ISA S88 (IEC61512) standard for batch software architecture by defining sections in accordance with the S88 physical and procedural layers.
Experience has shown us that a well-structured and easily understood document achieves cost reduction by the System Integrator, as their project risk is reduced.
To further enhance understanding by all members of a project team and minimise the potential risk of misinterpretation Intuitive has also developed a strategy, based on the software development spiral model. This includes a prototyping phase to aid in visualising the User Requirements.
